Parkston vs. Mt. Vernon Plank is ur front row seat to girls basketball playoffs
Feb 21, 2017

By Rich Winter

Well, well, well...the South Dakota high school basketball playoffs get going tonight with first round action in Class B Districts and Class A regions.

One of the games I'm really interested to see an outcome for is Mt. Vernon/Plankington at Parkston in the first round of the Region 5B playoffs. Now, I don't suppose that the clash between two 9-11 teams strikes much fear in Class A's elite but it's playoff time and anything can happen. As an example, McCook Central/Montrose was sailing along with a 17-2 record and Tri-Valley, 11-9 dispatched them in the last game of the regular season.

Region 5Seed PointsW-L
McCook Central/Montrose 44.90 17-3
West Central 41.65 10-10
Tri-Valley 40.70 11-9
Parkston 39.90 9-11
Mt. Vernon/Plankinton 39.45 9-11
Wagner 38.65 7-13
Bon Homme 35.65 1-19

So, MCM and Jaycee Pulse get a bye today while Bon-Homme is at West Central, Wagner is at Tri-Valley and MVP is at Parkston.

While it hasn't been a banner season for Brooke Seiler's crew, seniors Molly Schoenfelder, and McKenzie McKean would like nothing better to have a shot at leading their team into the final-32 for a crack at the first sweet-16 in South Dakota history.

Parkston has been hot as of late, winning five of their last seven, including a 38-29 win over MVP on Feb. 16.

Feb 03 4:00 p.m. CT Gregory Gregory 48-25 W 41 2-18
Feb 06 6:15 p.m. CT Chamberlain Parkston 47-40 W 44 7-13
Feb 07 6:30 p.m. CT Scotland Parkston 47-29 W 44 8-12
Feb 10 5:00 p.m. CT Bridgewater-Emery Mitchell-Corn Palace 45-52 L 33 5-15
Feb 14 6:30 p.m. CT Andes Central/Dakota Christian Parkston 54-24 W 47 14-6
Feb 16 7:30 p.m. CT Mt. Vernon/Plankinton Parkston 38-29 W 44 9-11
Feb 17 6:15 p.m. CT Avon Avon 28-47 L 39 18-2

MVP enters tonight's game with a 9-11 record...This team was hot in late January and early February rattling off four straight wins.

MVP struggled down the stretch, losing five of six but throw out the Bon Homme game and the combined record of the five teams they lost to was 73-28. That's some pretty good competiton and you would think Bill Marquardt's kids are toughened up for post-season play.

Jan 19 7:30 p.m. CT Kimball/White Lake Plankinton 48-34 W 44 8-12
Jan 31 4:00 p.m. CT Mitchell Christian Mt. Vernon 44-20 W 41 3-17
Feb 02 7:30 p.m. CT Bridgewater-Emery Bridgewater 54-40 W 44 5-15
Feb 03 6:15 p.m. CT Wagner Plankinton 46-38 W 44 7-13
Feb 06 5:30 p.m. CT Winner Winner 40-50 L 36 14-6
Feb 07 6:30 p.m. CT Dell Rapids Dell Rapids 35-59 L 39 16-4
Feb 10 TBA Ethan Mitchell-Corn Palace 14-48 L 39 19-1
Feb 13 7:30 p.m. CT Hanson Mt. Vernon 34-52 L 36 14-6
Feb 14 6:15 p.m. CT Bon Homme Tyndall 53-20 W 41 1-19
Feb 16 7:30 p.m. CT Parkston Parkston 29-38 L 33 9-11

Like Parkston, this is a young team with just two seniors, guard Erin Denning and guard Stephane Faulhaber.

This is a monster game, two nearly even programs trying to take the next step. For all those young player on the roster, a win in the post-season, any win is the building block for what they hope will come next year.

Expect a battle!
