Tea Area's Ethan Freidel takes the court tomorrow as the Titans tangle with STM

How much Burnell Glanzer runs through the veins of the Tea Area Titans

When I was a kid growing up in western South Dakota I couldn't help but fall in love with the Armour Packers. Some say that state championship game between Beresford and Armour may have been the greatest Class B chamionship game ever played. I was a tad to young to appreciate the greatness that was running through that Armour Packer squad (state champs in 78 and 79) the legend of Jeff Tiefenthaler's exploits at SDSU have often come up and every year when I see some of the elite Class B track records, right there are the Armour Packers.

Couldn't help but think about the Packers last week when I looked into the Tea Area Titan basketball team a bit. Saw the name of Friedel and wondered if they were related to former Packer great, Pat Freidel. Saw a little post on the Tea Area Facebook post soon after looking and there was a little blurb from Pat Freidel urging fan support for the Tea Titans.

Although I was a big Brian Bindert fan back in the day I clearly remember Pat Freidel being one tough hombre on the basketball court. Seriously tough: Great defense, led the attack from the G position and could score and was really part of some special, special teams under Burnell Glanzer at Armour.

While I was a little shocked Pat Freidel had kids at Tea Area I wasn't surpised those kids, and the rest of the Tea Area Titans have some seriously high basketball IQ's.

The older Freidel brother, Ethan, is up for South Dakota player of the year. When you discuss the state’s best shooters Freidel’s name is one of the first to come up.  The smooth shooting Freidel is scoring at a mark of 22.4 ppg including multiple 30+ point performances. In addition to his scoring Freidel has collected almost 5 rpg (4.9) and 2.3 spg.  Hit the 1000 clip during the season.

Younger brother, Noah, goes 6-foot-4 but he's awfully skilled, just like his brother and father.

Tea Area enteres the A tournament, which starts Thursday in Sioux Falls at 18-4 and the No. 6 seed in a wide open field where they will meet St. Thomas More in the late game Thursday night.

Tea Area lost their regular season finale to Sioux Falls Christian, No. 4 seed in A tournament, but the Titans have won nine of their last ten including stomping everyone in their path in the post-season.

Region 4A tourney:

72-38 over Beresford

72-55 over Canton

Sweet-16:

85-58 over Little Wound.

Could be a good run for Chris Fechner's crew. Tea Area looks to really be building some solid athletic traditions out east. Football team was state runner-up in 11A football.

To tie in the Burnell Glanzer thought that was associated with the title of this story. Glanzer was one of the all-time greats in South Dakota. Kinda fiery but that fire ran through the veins of his Armour players and you could just feel them compete with Glanzer almost competing with them.

Freidel learned under Glanzer, Freidel's kids learned under Freidel....Guessing there still has to be some fire there...

At any rate, congratulations Tea Area on taking that next step...Will be watching, can't wait!
