Hill City's Marion Hohn with the anchor of the Medley Relay in Pierre

Hill City's Marion Hohn has Anchor of the Week with massive medley effort
Apr 25, 2017

By Rich Winter

When Hill City's Marion Hohn took the baton for the anchor of the Medley relay in Pierre Friday, she was in third, about 20 meters behind Rapid City Stevens and Brandon Valley.

Like the smooth, savvy, veteran she is, Hohn charged the first 100 and steadily made up ground until she caught them, then tucked in behind!

And waited!

The veteran move left just enough in the tank and as Hohn charged down the stretch for her definitive move, she found another gear, one more time and edged Stevens: 4:24.08 to 4:24.75.

Brilliant day for Hill City who qualified 3 girls in the 1600 meters:

1600m Run - 5:26.90
1. Byers, Ella 5:13.50 Chamberlain
2. Simmons, Karlee 5:16.10 Hill City
3. Lavin, Maddie 5:16.20 Vermillion
4. Hohn, Marion 5:19.90 Hill City
5. Glazier, Tori 5:22.10 Custer
6. Schulz, Marisa 5:24.30 Dakota Valley
7. Savey, Cait 5:24.70 Beresford
8. Becker, Mckenzie 5:26.50 Hill City

Simmons No. 2 was really eye opening as she ran a great race against an elite field.

1 Simmons, Karlee 10 Hill City 5:25.64 5:16.34 2 10
2 Bennett, Kylee Sturgis Brown 5:33.00 5:17.71 2 8
3 Cassen, Autumn 9 Sturgis Brown 5:33.02 5:20.18 2 6
4 Hohn, Marion 11 Hill City 5:25.43 5:20.22 2 4
5 Wells, Lauren 10 Brandon Valley 5:27.80 5:21.50 2 2
6 Kuhn, Bryanna 9 Stevens 5:35.09 5:26.68 2 1
7 Becker, McKenzie 11 Hill City 5:45.43 5:26.74 2
8 Neumiller, Lia Sturgis Brown 5:37.79 5:27.32 2
9 Dykstra, Erica 11 Stevens 5:43.97 5:27.86 2

Great stuff from not just the girls but also the Hill City boys who won the medley relay. One of the really great, probably unnoticed by most was a great day from Corbin Miller.

Miller finished 3rd in a stud-field in the 400 meters.

1 Kuil, Cameron 12 Winner 50.67 50.15 5 10
2 Fjelstad, Sam 12 Sturgis Brown 51.55 50.72 5 8
3 Miller, Corbin 11 Hill City 52.54 51.10 5 6
4 Petersen, Braiden 11 Brandon Valley 51.90 51.40 5 4
5 Mott, Triston 11 Rapid City Central 53.39 52.33 4 2

That's a great effort from Miller who vaulted all the way to No. 2 ranked in the 400

400m Dash - 51.90
1. Kuil, Cameron 49.90 Winner
2. Miller, Corbin 50.80 Hill City
3. Priebe, Tiegen 51.10 Chamberlain
4. Aanderud, Jake 51.20 St. Thomas More

The un-noticed part of his day was that about 40 minutes after he ran the 400 he ran another one.

Hill City ended up winning the medley relay, and pre-qualifying for state as the quartert of Kalel Worischeck, Drew Hanson, Corbin Miller and Caleb Oliver. (Great 800 anchor from Oliver)

To get the stick around though, Miller really stepped up and ran a great leg on what must have been still rubbery legs.

WOW, that's a TUFF kid.
