Winner AREA welcomes participants in STATE LEGION Tourney
Jul 19, 2017

By Rich Winter

As some terrific Legion teams get ready to bust on over to Winner for the STATE Legion baseball tournament, the Panic Button, LiveTicket.TV and the entire baseball community/family in the area welcome our visitors from Groton, Vermillion, Platte-Geddes, Dell Rapids, Milbank, Spearfish, McCook Central/Montrose and of course host team, Winner/Colome to the area.

As we welcome our visitors to Leahy Bowl, we would like you to drink in some of the history of a baseball community that has ALWAYS supported hard ball.

Although there have been massive upgrades to the basebal facility, Leahy Bowl was built in 1948 on 17 acres of pasture. Originally the field was to be called "Bowl", but before it was completed, it was decided to be called "Leahy Bowl" after former Winner resident and Notre Dame Football Legend, Franky Leahy.

For generations, Winner Area has always fostered good baseball teams, starting from t-ball all the way up through the amateur team that continues to thrive today.

Action begins Friday with Groton taking on Vermillion followed by Milbank vs. Spearfish. The evening session features Platte/Geddes vs. Dell Rapids and the nightcap is McCook Central/Montrose vs. Winner/Colome.

A lot of very good baseball programs heading to Winner and a lot of miles for some of these fans to come visit. Don't worry, if ya can't make it, liveticket.tv has you covered!  You can find all the games at www.liveticket.tv as the games will be webcast with commentators and stats to give you fair, balanced and exciting coverage.

In addition, the Panic Button sportsblog will be covering games through the tournament and visiting with and talking to the coaches and players as we weave through what should be a phenomenal tournament. At www.panicbutton.live you will find photos, daily tournament updates and features with some of the standout athletes expected to make this tournament a barn-burner.

We know that a lot of our visitors will be traveling from far away, but, if ya got a minute, we'd really encourage you to check out some of our dining establishments and check out some of our area tourist attractions.

The Communities of Winner, Colome and Gregory all won state high-school football championships a year ago. Each has a storied tradition of excellence and some killer restaurants, bars and social activities that are worth asking about.

If you are staying overnight and have some time, a couple things you might think about checking out.

* Niobrara River - Tubing and fishing and go-carts

* Rosebud Indian Reservation 40 miles west....Some of the best hunting and fishing in all the state with prairie dog hunting galore. Timber reserve area through Grass Mountain is worth the drive as the Little White River flows through it in spectacular fashion.

* Winner and Mission both have golf courses.

* Outer edge of the Badlands is about 75 miles from Winner

Yes, we're a little bit country, but when its 105 degrees out, who doesn't want a pickup truck filled with water acting like a floating swimming pool?

We welcome you to Winner and Leahy Bowl and excitedly await each and every team as the come to do battle at historic LEAHY Bowl.
