Winner 4 x 200 takes down 32 year old record

Kinda lost in the shuffle of a terrific effort from Cameron Kuil and the Winner guys on their way to a 4th place team effort at the South Dakota state meet was the quartet of Riley Calhoon, Drew DeMers, Kayleb Brozik and Cameron Kuil breaking a 32-year old school record in the 4 x 200.

In 1985, the quartet of Rice, Connot, Vosika and Doug Brunkow won the then 800 meter relay in Sioux Falls with a time of 1:31.23.

On Saturday, Calhoon, DeMers, Brozik and Cameron Kuil etched their names into the record-book with a 1:31.21 and a third place finish at the state meet.

How cool is that?

Earlier this season, Calhoon, Isaac Naasz, DeMers and Kuil broke the school record in the 400 relay.

Interesting thought: More to come on Winner after I enjoy the rest of this Memorial Day, but food for thought, but Winner has had some incredible sprinters come through with Doug Brunkow, Chas DeMers and now Kuil putting their mark on the Winner program.

Doug Brunkow finished 2nd at state in the 100 and 200 meters to Vermillion's Brodie Berkhout. With the removal of the 800 relay record, Brunkow no longer holds a school record at Winner.

DeMers easily won the 100 and 200 his senior year, but he failed to make the finals in the 400 that year.

Kuil, who just missed the sprint triple, falling .01 short in the 100 meters put that Winner 400 record down into some seriously low territory when he ran a 48.52 in the finals of the 400.

That 400 record is now about a second faster than DeMers' record that stood at the beginning of the season.
