Winner's Kayleb Brozik has the heart of a champion
Jan 29, 2017

By Rich Winter

As I've gotten to know Kayleb Brozik's father a little better this year, somehow I'm finding it hard to write about the younger Brozik who is having a spectacular senior year at Winner high school.

An all-state football player who did it on both sides of the ball and the top ranked Class B 170 pounder in the state of South Dakota, sporting a 33-3 record and one of the premier half-milers (800 meters) in the state of South Dakota, frankly, I get a little thrill every time I see him compete in whatever sport/season he's conquering next.

Brozik finished third at the Lee Wolf Invitational in Aberdeen yesterday, losing a heart-breaker, 7-5 in the semis to eventual champion, Bradley Nielson of Aberdeen Central.

Loss aside, Brozik really exemplified what being a competitor is all about at yesterday's tournament.

In a quarterfinal win over Jon Binstock of Sioux Falls O'Gorman, Brozik likely broke his nose.

So, in the semi-final matchup with Nielson, spurting blood from the nose several times and trailing, 4-1, the young man from Winner just kept coming.

Brozik tied the match at 5-5 and late in the third period, the match looked headed to overtime. Some in attendance thought the takedown awarded to Nielson in the final seconds was the wrong call and that the match should have gone to overtime.

Losing a tough match like that, having a broken nose, and now sporting another injury, groin I think, Brozik battled back.

Brozik decisioned Nate Bauer of Mobridge/Pollock 10-2 and then squared off against Caleb Orris of Clark/Willow Lake. Now, mind you, broken nose, injured lower section, tough loss in the semis and with a jillion reasons to just mail it in, Brozik dug deep.

You see, Brozik is the No. 1 rated Class B guy in South Dakota. Trey Nachtigal, who Brozik beat the Mid-Dakota Monster is No. 2 and Orris, 26-4 is the No. 3 ranked 170 pounder in South Dakota.

Not giving an inch, Brozik gutted out a 4-3 win!

Sitting over here in Mission I continue to be amazed by just how tuff the Winner wrestling schedule is. Early in the day, after the quarters, the Warriors were in third, they eventually slipped to 6th, but, were only a half-point out of 4th.
