Who remembers the 7-foot Native baller from Pierre
Jan 26, 2017

By Rich Winter

Before the days of a 3-class system in South Dakota high-school hoops, folks from CEB, Winner and Todd County got quite familiar with Pierre's Joe Ashley. In the old system, CEB, Todd County and Winner, had to go through Pierre to reach the state tournament, and back in the late 70's that road was blocked, with authority by a 7-footer from Pierre, native fella named Joe Ashley.

Big honor coming for Ashley later this spring as it was announced in late 2016 that the original BIG fella is going into the South Dakota High School, Basketball Hall of Fame.

Bout time man!

The man struck fear in opponents and awe into the crowd wherever he went. Who saw a 7-footer at the high school level, especially in 1979?

Ashley recorded 405 blocked shots during his high school career that ended with a state tite in 1979. Think about that number for a second....405 blocked shots. Probably didn't play, or play much as a freshman, let's assume not much, so, in all likelihood, let's give him 25 games for the next three seasons.

Hmmmm, 405 blocked shots in 75 games....That's 5.4 per game. Count the number of shots he affected, and the original menace in the middle was born.

Triple double: blocks, rebounds and points....A regular thing for Ashley back in the day before anyone talked about triple doubles.

That's awesome baby!

He played collegiately at Iowa State University and South Dakota State University.
