West Central's Derick Peters wins Roy Griak
Sep 24, 2017

By Rich Winter

Late Saturday afternoon word floated in that West Central senior Derick Peters won the Roy Griak Invitational in Minnesota. For most folks that might be reading this, ok, for cross-country fans reading this, WELL, this is a big deal.

The Class A favorite won the event with a 5K time of 15:49.63 with second place being Matthew Carmody of Downing Catholic from Des Moines Iowa who ran 16:11.

Ok, Griak is a big deal with just about everyone from the upper midwest showing up. I saw the time and the second place time and for an event that draws 45 teams and like 300 runner, 15:49 seemed a little slow for wimming a meet that big.

Garretson head coach Jason Bohl explained the course is very hilly and it was about 65 and humid yesterday.

Alright, so if Peters can dominate Roy Griak, Well, he's in for some serious hardware this season. Undefeated on the season, Peters will now focus in on defending his Class A title. There are some great runners in the A field, but, Peters looks like he could be one of the best in the country.

So, if this man stays healthy, the Class A crown is his.

After that, Nike Heartland and perhaps Nike Nationals.

Great run from Peters. Not sure if we've had a South Dakotan with that event....
