Casey Schlecter helped lead Miller/Wessington into the state amateur tournament for the first time since 2014

Welcome to the party Miller/Wessington
Aug 3, 2017

By Rich Winter

When the first pitch is thrown out in Mitchell today for the opening game of day 2 at the state amateur tournament, the club from Miller/Wessington will likely be clawing and scratching, just like they did just to make the tournament.

Having not made the state amateur tourney since 2014, Miller Wessington earned their state tournament by claiming the final spot from the Pony Hills League.

After dropping a 3B semi to Plankinton, M/W defeated Kimball/White Lake 6-5 to earn the third bid from a competitive league.

From 2010-2014, M/W was a regular at the state tournament, but bids are hard to come by and this M/W squad has been through some tough games just to reach the dance.

How the guys do today, in their opening game against Lake Nordon, webcast at www.liveticket.tv, will likely depend on how well the big guns perform.

Casey Schlecter leads the team in hitting, batting .432 with 22 rbi and 4 home runs. Dave Jensen bats .378 while Engles Perez bats .333. Both Jensen and Perez have driven in ten runs this year.

Not sure who gets the call on the mound today but that will likely come down to Schlecter or Cody Cotton. Schlecter is 4-5 on the year with a 5.03 ERA with 61 strikeouts. Cotton is 3-5 having worked 60 innings this year.

Note: On the opening night of the state tournament, over 5000 people watched the webcast on www.liveticket.tv.

Live ticket will be there all day today, webcasting games to communities across South Dakota and engaged family members across the country.
