The Lady Falcon volleyball team won their summer league tournament and has a host of talented athletes returning

Watzel's Watch List - Don't sleep on Todd County volleyball
Aug 2, 2017

By Betsy Watzel

With high school sports seasons just around the corner, one of the teams that I'm anxious to get a look at is the volleyball girls over in Mission. It has been a difficult couple of seasons for coaches Sam Hand and Rosebud Brushbreaker, where wins have been few and far between as young players have filled a lot of roles over the past few seasons.

That said, as I watch from Winner, at some point, when ALL of those athletes over in Todd County figure it out, teams had better be prepared because I get the feeling Todd County has turned the corner.

Really just one senior to replace, that being all-Big-Dakota-Conference libero, Love Hill. After that its a bunch of juniors and seniors that took their lumps a season ago and now appear ready to take that next step of being competitive in every match.

Barely drew a whisper on social media this summer but Hand's Lady Falcons won the White River summer league. Now, granted, it was a four-team summer league, but when you are a team that hasn't won a lot, winning that league becomes a stepping stone and a building block for this squad.

Another item that barely drew a whisper on social media this summer was the announcment that Hand, the head volleyball coach, was named a Region Track Assistant Coach of the Year. Hand has done a good job of steadying that program, back-tracking to teach fundamentals and rebuilding a lot of weight-lifting, tradition and team bonding into the mix.

The Panic Button was kind enough recently to share of his infinite wisdom and told me a story about Hand's efforts to get young ladies in the weight room this summer.

It seems one of the girls missed the morning workout so Hand was there in the afternoon with the girl. Not only did she help with the workout, she participated in it, doing 100 box squats to set the tone for just one youngster.

I like it!

Its the athletes though, and I expect youngsters like Raven Cournoyer, Doris White Hat and Kylie Randall to take a step forward this season.

The Lady Falcons have enough big people including Gabby Iron Heart, D. Valandra (who has a wicked left-hand serve and hitting motion), Samantha Yellow Eagle, and others that blocking and hitting this season will be much improved. Add Shayla Bordeaux, senior, into that mix and I think Haylee Quick Bear as a transfer from St. Francis Indian (I think) and you have the makings of a big, athletic and hungry team just waiting to wreak havoc with teams that might overlook them.

It has been a while since Galen Busch court over in Mission has been rocking. Last season, despite not winning a lot of games, the high-school fans (Cartman and Butters especially) really gave TC a home-court advantage.

This team needs some wins early in the year to build confidence. The talent is there, the fundamentals are better, and it should be a much improved year for a bunch of ladies that like to get after it and compete.
