Todd County vs. Little Wound decides Region 7A girls pecking order
Feb 12, 2017

By Rich Winter

Who knew that on Dec. 16 when the Todd County girls lost to Little Wound 47-45 that these two teams would run rough-shod through the rest of their Region 7 competition?

Little Wound, with the return of Janay Jumping Eagle and the addition of Miracle Spotted Bear to go with a talented returning cast for Lyle LeBeaux's squad was expected to be there, but, Todd County, with a host of new faces and starting three sophomores, a freshman and an 8th grader was not.

And yet, as the dust settles from an extraordinary week of basketball in South Dakota, we can all stop talking about it, the Little Wound vs. Todd County rematch, for all the marbles, goes down on Tuesday in Kyle.

Little Wound is 16-2 with losses to Region 2 power, Hamlin and a loss last week, 58-57 to Laura Big Crow's Pine Ridge Lady Thorpes, in Pine Ridge.

Todd County is 17-2, with their only losses coming to Little Wound LNI and an 81-69 loss last Monday at McLaughlin who is just beating everyone on the schedule as the postseason approaches.

Clearly these are two quality teams with terrific athletes and basketball players all over the court.

The game is big for a lot of reasons.

If Little Wound wins they likely cruise into the Sweet 16 with a No. 3 or No. 4 seed and play the No. 12 seeded team after the teams reseed with 16 teams left.

Todd County is currently the No. 6 seed in the state and they could use a win to boost their power point totals heading into the Region tournament.

The winner likely gets a bye in the first round of the Region 7A playoffs.

Current standings of Region 7A basketball

Little Wound 44.56 16-2
Todd County 44.11 17-2
Pine Ridge 42.94 13-5
Winner 41.63 13-6
Red Cloud 40.00 8-10
St. Francis Indian 38.50 6-12
Bennett County 36.06 2-16

Pine Ridge, with the win over Little Wound jumped in the Region rankings and they have likely solidified their No. 3 position in the Region.

Winner, who lost to McLaughlin Friday is almost certain of the No. 4 seed.

Red Cloud will be No. 5

St. Francis locked in at No. 6

Bennett County, No. 7 just hoping to make it to the finish line.
