Throwers corner - SDSU getting a monster in Canistota's Xavier Ward
May 10, 2017

By Rich Winter

With a ton of epic performances going down all over the stadium at the recently completed Howard Wood Dakota Relays, could not help but make a ringside appearnace for the high school boys shot put.

Terrific competition with nine guys going over the 50-foot battier.

McGough, Logan RC Central 1 55-10.75 17.03m
Ward, Xavier Canistota HS 2 55-03.75 16.85m
Campbell, Matt Colome HS 3 52-09.25 16.08m
Berg, Tanner Watertown HS 4 52-05.00 15.97m
Stratton, Logan Luverne MN HS 5 51-11.50 15.83m
McCormick, Mason SF Roosevelt 6 51-09.00 15.77m
Andrus, Macen Watertown HS 7 51-03.50 15.63m
Hofteizer, Damon Stanley County HS 8 50-06.75 15.41m
Christie, Bryce Brandon Valley HS 9 50-02.50 15.30m

Couldn't help but be drawn into the battle near the top of the board to see what Class B athletes Matt Campbell and Xavier Ward were doing.

Ward got out to a lifetime best of 55-3.75 which held the lead for much of the competition. In the finals, Rapid City Central senior Logan McGough erupted for a 3-feet personal best of 55-10.75 to claim the competition.

Ward, the Canistota product, who has signed to play football at South Dakota State University ended up finishing 2nd, with Colome's Campbell finishing third in the event.

Just happened to snap a shot of Ward in the ring...Check out the tree trunks on that young man. Wow, look for him to be one of those guys pushing for playing time as a true freshman at SDSU.

Howard Wood is always such an interesting competition because you have the overall battle of Howard Wood and then you have the battle within the battle as Class B, Class A and Class AA competititors keep an eye on those they will battle in about two weeks at the state meet.

Class AA -

Shot - Central's McGough stamps himself as the favorite but don't count out Watertown's Tanner Berg.

AA discus is wide open with Watertown's Macen Andrus finishing 9th at Howard Wood as the top AA contestant

Class A - Hoftiezer leaves his mark

Stanley County senior Damon Hoftiezer really stamped himself as one of the real contenders in both the shot and discus.

Shot 50-5 placed 8th

Discus: 7th - 152 feet....Custer's Reed Ashmore fourth in the HW discus with a toss of just over 154 feet. Class A discus could be really competitive at the state meet.

Class B:

Shot - Looks like a two-horse race at the top with Campbell and Ward the cream of the crop.

Discus: Two guys again, Campbell and Chester Area's Austin Eppard.

Eppard was 2nd in the Howard Wood disc - 173

Campbell, third with 166

Keep an eye on Castlewood's Costner Ching
