Wagner sophomore Stephon St. Pierre 5th in Class A 100 hurdles

St. Pierre and Patterson shine for WAGNER
May 28, 2017

By Rich Winter

Had the most interesting meet running into Wagner sophomore hurdler, Stephon St. Pierre right out of the gate Friday morning. Early in the day, St. Pierre got out quick in the 110 hurdles, think he finished third in a very competitive qualifying heat with a 15.97.

As he came back to the start line to 'look for' his sweats, he and I both kinda waited to see if he made finals.

When the announcement came that he had, St. Pierre gave a little fist pump and then broke out in one of the brightest smiles I saw all weekend.

Well, having made it to Saturday's finals, but, running out of lane 6, St. Pierre rocketed out of the blocks and was even with the elite hurdlers in the field through the first four hurdles.

While Redfield's Cooper Baloun pulled ahead to win the race with a 15.08, St. Pierre, amidst the carnage that is the 110 hurdles, held form and got to the line 5th in 15.7.

Seasons best time and a 5th place effort from a sophomore....Nice, and big things ahead for this young man.

Patterson third in Class A discus:

Happened over to the Class A discus arena and caught the last few throws from each of the contendors.

Big effort on her second-to-last throw from Wagner junior, Janae Patterson who hit 124-11. Really nice throw from Patterson, who improved her best throw of the competition but couldn't quite get past Hamlin's Faith Leiseth who finished 2nd with a toss of 128-5.

Class A girls discus:

1st - Jordan Menken - Custer 137

2nd - Faith Leiseth - Hamlin 128

3rd  - Janae Patterson - Wagner - 124-11

On Patterson's final throw, the young lady fell upon completion of her rotations. Somehow, despite hitting the deck, she not only got the discus out to 123-feet, she also somehow managed to stay in the ring and not foul.

Nice and athletic in the ring from Patterson, and as she'll be back next year...Good stuff ahead!
