Jace Faulkner and the Wagner Red Raiders had a solid outing against Stanley County

Signs of life for Wagner Red Raiders
Sep 5, 2017

By Rich Winter

Boy after score searching through Wagner's first two football games of the year, blowout losses to Woonsocket/Wessington-Springs/Sanborn Central 8-36 and Mt. Vernon/Plankinton 0-38, surely Wagner was going to get it from a Stanley County squad that roughed up MVP the first game of the season.

Nope, not even close!

In face, Jason Knebel's crew showed up to play and dang near scratched out a victory, losing 20-14.

The Red Raiders, in fact, took a 14-0 lead after Preston Nedved caught a 2-yard TD pass from Jace Faulkner. Still in the first quarter, Faulkner hooked up with Emilio Cournoyer on a 47-yard pass play and after the Alex Sully run, Wagner led it 14-0.

Tied at 14-14, Stanley County running back, Dylan Gabriel put the game away with a late score as Wagner dropped to 0-3 on the year.

Sully had 45 yards rushing and Faulkner, was 14-25 for 172 yards and 2 scores.

Stanley County (2-1) plays at Custer on Friday, while Wagner (0-3) plays at Chamberlain on Friday.

Girls volleyball: Big test tonight for Amy Tyler's crew as they head over to Platte to take on Platte-Geddes with a 4-2 record in tow.

Couple notes for Wagner Red Raider fans, that volleyball match will be webcast at two locations:

Wagner has wins over Vermillion, McCook Central/Montrose, Parkston and Chamberlain on the season.

Losses this season, and quality losses at that as the Red Raiders have dropped two matches, one to No. 1 ranked Northwestern and perennial power, Arlington.

P/G is 1-3 on the year but the Black Panthers are coming off a win over Corsica-Stickney.

Cross-country: I'm sorry, but I can't find results from the MVP meet over the weekend, and I do see on the schedule that coach Thomas Cartney's squad is in Scotland today. Will post results as soon as they become available.
