Northern State freshman, Sami Shields ran cross country and indoor track for the Wolves. She'll hit the outdoor circuit later this month

Sami Shields is running down a dream at Northern State

Some kinda cool news passed along from up north about a week ago now, telling me about Northern State freshman distance runner, Sami Shields.

The daughter of Cheryl Sam was a cross country and track runner for the Aberdeen Central Golden Eagles.  Shields placed tenth last fall at the ESD Conference cross country meet to help win the team title, and followed that up with a 20th place finish at state. In 2013 she earned the most improved award and was also named All-ESD and All-State in 2015. Sami and the Golden Eagles are also three time ESD track Champions and the 2015 State Runners-Up, where she ran in the 1600m run, 4x800 and sprint medley relays. Shields also participates in basketball for Aberdeen Central.

Just a freshman, on scholarship at Northern State University, Shields was a contributing factor on Northern State's cross-country team this fall.

Cross Country

2016: Finished eleventh at the Herb Blakely Invite with a time of 20:04.0 (5k)… had a season best of 26:21.0 (6k) at the Roy Griak Invitational… Redshirt Season…

Best part of this story, I think, is the opportunity to compete in collegiate athletics and using that vehicle to further one's education.
