Winner senior Jayden Schroeder made finals in the shot and discus. He finished 8th in the shot giving Winner a point they would need to ensure the teams 4th place finish

SCHROEDER, 4 x 100 come up HUGE as Winner 4th in State A track
Jun 2, 2017

By Rich Winter

Pretty gritty effort from the Winner boys track team at the recently completed Class A state championships. Cameron Kuil did some big-time damage, finishing 2nd in the 100, winning the 200 and defending his Class A state championship in the 400 meters with a ridiculous new school record of 48.52.

By himself Mr. Kuil racked up 28 points as Winner finished 4th in the team standings by scoring 41.

Class A boys team points:

Sioux Falls Christian 112

St. Thomas More 106

Madison 41

Winner 40

Chamberalin 37

But, in order to get up to that 41 points, Mr. Kuil needed some help.

Riley Calhoon, Drew Demers, Kayleb Brozik and Kuil broke the school record in the 4 x 100 on their way to a 3rd place finish. That third place finish is worth six points so 28 + 6 = 34 points

Kayleb Brozik 800 meters 5th place - Oh man, what a race this was for Brozik. First lap, Brozik found himself in 2nd place. At about the 350 mark of the first lap, Brozik, got elbowed twice while trying to pass and eventually moved wide and nearly cut off St. Thomas More junior Ty Trainor. Having been jostled quite bit in that first 400, Brozik took off on the second lap, opening about a ten meter lead on a surprised and shocked field who had to play catch up.

Brozik got passed coming down the stretch and eventually finished 5th in the event - 4 points.

Ok, we're at 38 points....

Winner senior Jayden Schroeder had a terrific state track meet making finals in both of his events, shot and discus.

Jayden Schroeder 8th - 48-3.5" - That effort was worth one point.

Although Schroeder got 9th in the discus, his 136-3 was a lifetime best on the biggest state.

Ok, we're at 39 points.

Interesting that the Winner 4 x 100 team of Riley Calhoon, Isaac Naasz, Drew DeMers and 8th-grader Brady Fritz made the finals.

Heading into the meet, Winner coach Larry Aaker had a decision to make as to which relay, 4x100 or 4x200, his teams should use Cameron Kuil in?

The 4x100 can be a dicey affair with a big margin for error with one tiny little mistake.

Well, Kuil ran the 4x200 and the Winner B team ran well enough to qualify for the Finals.

In the Finals, the guys ran 45.17 to finish 8th, also worth one point.

That's a great team effort to really dig out a few extra points that Winner would eventually need to bring home that 4th place finish.

Couple other good results

* Brady Fritz 10th in the long and triple jumps

* Ninth grader Joren Brunn over 40 feet in the triple jump and

* The Winner medley team of Riley Calhooh, Drew DeMers, Luke Engel and Izak Molaterno ran a 3:52, about three seconds off of reaching the finals.
