Marc Whirlwind Soldier battles Kiko Mendoza at the Todd County Invite

Remember when KIKO MENDOZA won 4-straight state titles
Sep 28, 2017

By Rich Winter

Native American cross-country runners from across the upper midwest are about to descend on Rapid City for the Lakota Nation Invitational cross-country meet....

There have been some dandies in Rapid City...That one year, CEB's Kiko Mendoza, Todd County's Marc Whirlwind Soldier and Wyoming Indian's Caleb Her Many Horses....Oh Baby, that was a good one with multiple state titles amongst these guys, MULTIPLE.

I betcha Kernit Grimshaw has a shot of that somewhere?

Very excited to see how this all shakes out!

Todd County sophomore Kelsie Herman and teammate Karli Prue are going to be up front. Someone from Wyoming Indian will challenge, and who is going to walk away with the coveted TEAM TITLE?

Boys race looks special:

On Tuesday, Todd County, Crow Creek, St. Francis and White River hooked up in a really good team battle. SF was missing one of their best, Traven Traversie...If he's running SF could be dangerous.

Lotta seniors on that SF roster...

Crow Creek's Trevin McBride finished 2nd in Miller on Monday and then clocked a 17:32 in Mission.

He's probably the favorite but there are a number of guys that can hang with him.

And who will Coach Julie bring back to contest? (Apologize for the error in the earlier version, appeciate you pointing it out).

Oh, and back to Mr. Mendoza

That guy, KIKO, was TUFF!

Still the only boy/man in the state of South Dakota to win four-straight individual cross country. Won three at Takini and then came to CEB and won a Class A cross-country against one of the top-fields ever assembled for a Class A race.

Four straight state title in cross country.

That record might never be touched!!

Wow, can't wait to see the pictures.
