Red Cloud's Ecoffey with MONSTER Triple-jump effort at STATE TRACK
May 29, 2017

By Rich Winter

Early Saturday morning in Sioux Falls I was a little startled to see Red Cloud sophomore Echo Ecoffey standing in the infield for the awards ceremony for the girls triple jump. The event was actually completed on Friday, but as it was the last event of the prelims, they actually awarded the medals on Saturday morning.

Well, cool, Ecoffey got a medal I thought to myself.

And then when I saw her standing on the podium, all the way up to third place, well, that just blows the mind.

Ecoffey came into the state meet in the first of three flights. Her seed jump was about 2-feet under those in the final flight and she needed about a two-foot personal best to make finals.

Try a three feet personal best as Ecoffey got all the way out to 35-8.25.....

The winner, Belle Fourche sophomore Shayla Howell, who was the Class A MVP jumped...

1st - Howell - 39-9.25 (Third best all-time in South Dakota)

2nd - Anna Rasmussen - Dakota Valley - 35-10.5

3rd - Echo Ecoffey - Red Cloud - 35-8.25.

That's awesome to come up with the goods on the biggest stage of the year...

One of my favorite moments of the entire meet was seeing the Red Cloud athletes and coach Lema Leader Charge all smiles as the name Ecoffey was announced to the crowd as the THIRD best triple-jumper in Class A.

Some great things ahead for this young lady as she also participated in the long jump and 300 hurdles. She likely would have been a participant in the 100 hurdles but a false-start at the Region meet stopped her from qualifying in four events.

Well done Red Cloud....Love the enthusiasm from the team and expect a few more of you to find the podium next season.
