White River's Astleford 8th in Summit League Javelin

Rachel Astleford - If you BELIEVE IT, it can happen
May 14, 2017

By Rich Winter

I was aware of former White River prep thrower, Rachel Astleford when she came through the high school ranks. She was a good shot-putter, somewhere around 37 or 38 feet and I believe she made the podium at the state track meet, at least once.

Think I heard she was going to South Dakota State, and while there was going to try to walk-on to the Division 1 program.

That's where the story is supposed to end, right?

Small town-girl with big dreams goes to a Division 1 Program, gets inimidated by all the talent around her, gives up on her track dreams and decided to JUST be a student.

Well, Astleford wasn't intimidated, in fact, she went out of her comfort zone and tried the javelin.

I think she liked it!

At the recently completed Summit League Outdoor Championships, Astleford tossed the javelin far enough to claim 8th place in a wicked conference championship.

At the same meet, Astleford got the shot-put out to 42'5" for an almost two foot personal best at the biggest meet of the year.

THAT'S AWESOME!

But, success didn't come righ away, except in the classroom.
