Platte/Geddes vs. Winner/Colome promises to be a WAR
Jul 23, 2017

By Rich Winter

If you are planning on attending the Platte-Geddes vs. Winner/Colome game today ya better get there early. Crowds have been superb at the State B Legion tournament and as these two teams get ready to lace em up for an elimination game galore, you sorta get the feeling that this one REALLY matters and that everyone will be watching.

These two teams, seperated by 52 miles and located on HWY 18 have seen each other multiple times through the last ten years. Everyone on both teams knows each other. The coaches know the strengths and weaknesses of every player.

It's no secret that Winner/Colome is, always has been and always will be a baseball power. Winners of the state high-school baseball title last summer, there have been numerous times where Platte/Geddes has been on the wrong end of the scoreboard with Winner/Colome advancing to this state tournament or that.

But, earlier this spring, Platte-Geddes turned the tables, defeating Winner in the Region tournament before knocking out St. Thomas More to advance to the state baseball tournament.

In their opening round game at Leahy Bowl, Platte-Geddes fought back to tie the game with Dell Rapids before losing 6-4 in ten innings. On Saturday, P/G got on track and knocked off Groton to stay alive.

For Winner/Colome, a workmanlike 5-3 win over Miner/McCook in the opening round was followed up by a 10-0 drubbing at the hands of what looks to be a phenomenal Spearfish team.

While Kelly O'Bryan pitched in the opening round game to earn the save, he'll likely get the call on the dish today for coach Drew Weber.

P/G has spent more pitching as that extra innings game with Dell-Rapids took its toll. Coach Kuiper was keeping it close to the vest yesterday when talking about who would start, but, this team is deep and scrappy and they will find the guy.

Couple of guys to keep an eye on today:

Riley Calhoon - W/C's leadoff hitter has been one tough hombre in this tournament. Quick out of the box, Calhoon is a tough out on any infield hit. Once on, he's the catalyst that gets the Winner/Colome offense going with O'Bryan and DeMers following.

Riley Hoffman - P/G's leadoff hitter, I think....This guy is just clutch everytime you see him at the plate. Sweet swing that always seems to find the field.

Clearly, these are two very good ball clubs and while the winner of the game moves on in the tournament, they also move up the chain-link fence of baseball powers in the area.

Should be a tremendous game...If ya can't make it, the game will be webcast at www.liveticket.tv and of course winnerwarriorslive.com

See ya there...
