The Pierre Lady Govs advanced to the AA soccer finals with a 2-1 win over Aberdeen Central

Pierre LADY GOVS beat Aberdeen Central to reach AA title tilt

Entering the South Dakota Class AA tournament with a 9-1-2 record and the No. 3 seed in the state tournament, the Lady Governer soccer team certainly looked like a contender. That said, the Lady Govs knew they would have to come up with the goods in Tuesday's match against Aberdeen Central on the Golden Eagles home turn. AC entered the tournament with a 9-0-3 record, BUT, one of those ties came against Pierre on Aug. 18.

Well, seeds be darned, home-field advantage - C-YA.

Pierre advanced to Saturday's final with a 2-1 win over Aberdeen Central to secure a spot in Saturday's state championship game.

And, with all the drama going on in the lower portion of the bracket, the upper-bracket took a hit when top seed, Rapid City Stevens dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 8 seed Sioux Falls O'Gorman.

Well, the O'Gorman train kept on rolling as the Sioux Falls school defeated No. 4 Brandon Valley 1-0 in Tuesday's semis.

Pierre coach Sidney Zanin said this in his interview with the Pierre Capitol Journal.

“The girls played out of their minds,” Zanin said. “To beat Aberdeen on their home field to get to the final is awesome, especially since the final will be right back in Aberdeen. Aberdeen played very physical, baut we only allowed them to get three shots on goal. The goal they got came towards the end of the second half on a breakaway. We played most of the game on their half of the field, so it was just a great overall performance.”

Pierre vs. O'Gorman, Saturday at 5 p.m.

* Two teams have not played each other this year

* O'Gorman defeated Pierre in last years state semis

“The girls remember last year,” Zanin told the Capitol Journal. “There’s still some bitterness about last year, so I think it will motivate them. O’Gorman’s struggled throughout the year, but it’s a whole different story once you reach that final.”

Of note for a lot of Panic Button readers, Pierre junior, Emily Mikkelsen, a junior mid-fielder is the daughter of former Martin standout, Michelle Olson Mikkelsen (Moo-Moo big fella) and the grand-daughter of Mike & Betty Olson of Martin.
