MOPO senior Nathan Bauer returns for what should be a punishing ground game...

MOPO looking to do damage in 11B football
Aug 6, 2017

By Rich Winter

Just before the start of last year's high school football season I asked Winner football coach Dan Aaker about the trip to Mobridge/Pollock for the opening game of the season. Even though Aaker had one of the all-time great 11B teams under his watch you got the feeling that he was still a little nervous about the game up in Mobrdige...Guessing there have been some strange goings on up there with a few upsets along the way that had Aaker nervous.

Almost sad this summer when I learned that MOPO and Winner weren't going to be playing each other to start the season. Winner lost a ton and MOPO has some studs returning to the lineup, and you get the feeling that could have, would have been a hell of a game.

Instead, MOPO opens up with Redfield/Doland on Aug. 18, in Redfield before a home game with Sioux Falls Christian on the 25th.

If coach Dan Merkel can get through those games unscathed, he has an open date to tinker with whatever might ail the Tigers during their first two games.

Here is the rest of MOPO's schedule...

3 Sep 08 7:00 p.m. CT Aberdeen Roncalli Mobridge-Pollock
4 Sep 15 7:30 p.m. CT Stanley County Ft. Pierre
5 Sep 22 7:00 p.m. CT Groton Area Groton
6 Sep 29 6:00 p.m. CT Cheyenne-Eagle Butte Mobridge
7     Sisseton
8     McLaughlin

Gotta be honest in saying I don't know a whole lot about who MOPO has coming back. Don't know who plays QB or what kind of offense they run...

What I do know is they have two absolute studs coming back in Nathan Bauer and Carson Keller.

Bauer, who finished 2nd in the 170 lb. Class B state wresting tournament had a solid campaign in track and I'm guessing his work ethic went bonkers this summer in preparation for a senior year that should see well over 1000 yards on the gridiron.

My other guy, Carson Keller...Had a really tough region in track last year with some of the best shot and disc guys in the state to get through. Still, Keller had the best discus throw in the state for a junior last year...Looks like a polite, tough kid that works hard in the weightroom...Guessing Bauer will get pretty familiar with Keller's backside as MOPO looks to unleash a punishing ground game.

Looking for a good year from this squad and come playoff time, maybe we'll get to see that Winner vs. MOPO game, when it really matters.

OOOOOOOHHHHH, good luck MOPO, will be watching!
