Lower Brule athlete is Class B High Jump CHAMP
Jun 20, 2017

By Rich Winter

Yes, I realize we are creeping past the middle of June but I couldn't not mention and offer some congratulations to Lower Brule junior JayShawn Milton who claimed the Class B state high jump championship with a monster effort of 6-feet-7 inches.

That is something else...

I'm guessing Lower Brule has had a state track champion, or two along the way but these kinds of things don't come around that often and that puts Milton in some rare air.

Milton turned back the Class B field MVP, Wall's Allan McDonnell who had the best leap in all of South Dakota 6-feet-8 coming into the state meet.

But, when it counted most, Milton got up and over 6-feet-7 to claim a state title. Saw this young jumper early in the season the first time he went over 5-11....the next week he went 6-feet-1, and only got better as the year went on. What I like most about his jumping is the quick approach. The young guy is jumping like elite jumpers around the world and really attacks the bar.

He'll be a senior next season and with a little more work, 7-feet is not out of the question...State record is 7-feet-2

Quite a presence from the Sioux jumpers who had three athletes entered in the event. Marlowe LaRoche was entered but failed to make the opening height. Iren Grassrope was entered in the event but chose to compete in his distance specialties.

800 meters: Grassrope finished 11th with a time of 2:09...

3200 meters: About 45 minutes after just missing a medal in the 800, Grassrope got back on the track and finished 6th in the 3200 meter run with a time of 10:30.

1600 meters: On day two of the state track meet, Grassrope also competed in the 1600 where he finished 14th.

Just wanted to give a little shout out to Lower Brule this morning. The track team went from not having much to really scoring a lot of points in a lot of events.

And,  they got a state champ out of the deal...Well done Lower Brule, keep up the good work.
