Winner's Atlas Willuweit is ready for some WRESTLING!!

It's WRESTLING season - ALMOST - Winner ready to RUMBLE at state cross
Oct 19, 2017

By Rich Winter

As Winner senior Atlas Willuweit crossed the finish line of the last 5k for his immediate future, he walked up to the Panic Button and said, "It's wrestling season."

Ahhh yes, almost!

Always find some admiration in people that do the RUGGED sports of cross country with the intentions of getting prepared for their next sport. While Willuweit's time of 21-something would have been three minutes behind Sidda Schuyler, what this guy did was lay down a big-time base of fitness for what could be a MONSTOUS senior year on the mat.

A year ago, Willuweit weighed 138 and cut to 120. This year he is 130 and has his eyes firmly glued to getting back to 120 where he figures to be one the B bracket's best.

But, it's not quite wrestling season!

Willuweit's sparring partner, Wyatt Turnquist, the junior who is expected to take the next step on the mat this year qualified for the state meet with an 18th place finish.

Sophomore, Dawson Philips finished 16th with a time of 17:54

I hope Kade Watson still talks to me when he's famous

Coming into the season the general question was could Winner 8th-grader Kade Watson made the podium (top-25). After watching him bounce around the Chamberlain course, stride for stride with Stanley County senior, Shay Vandenhemel and running a PR of 16:17, the question now is how high will this young man climb onto the podium?

It is rare for an 8th-grader to be running like this but Watson has that bounce about him. More than that though, he looks like a student of the sport and someone that puts his heart and soul into his craft.

Those Winner distance track records....Be on high alert...Watson is coming for ya....

More on the Winner girls later today but congratulations to coach Schuyler and the entire Winner cross-country program. Both teams are TUFF, and everyone seems to be peaking at just the right time.
