Isabella Brouwer ready for the Burke meet

Isabella Brouwer ready to TANGLE with TUFF BURKE invite
Sep 27, 2017

By Rich Winter
One of the really nice surprises in cross country this year was to see that long time Todd County coach Larry Lucas has taken over as coach of the crew from AC/DC. It's a pretty small crew with only two athletes out this year.

"I have two girls for the Andes Central/Dakota Christian Thunder. Isabella Brouwer, a 7th grader, has run varsity and medaled in every meet this year. She comes from a good running/sprinting family and should qualify for state," Lucas said. "Hannah Hansum is a 10th grader and is also in her first year of cross country. She ran her first varsity 5K at Platte last week and finished 23rd."
Recap of Platte meet from newspaper:
A good mix of area Class A and B schools competed in the Platte Invitational Cross Country Meet at the Lake Platte Golf Course on Saturday, September 23. The Meet was held as scheduled and finished up prior to the afternoon rains setting in. Running for the Andes Central/Dakota Christian Thunder in the Girls Varsity 5K race were Hannah Hansum and Isabella Brouwer. Isabella finished in 7th place right behind some top area runners, while Hanna just missed earning a medal in her first 5K with a 23rd place finish. Their times were 21:55 and 22:13.
Coach Larry Lucas praised Isabella’s and Hannah’s efforts. “This was a good meet for us and it was great to see so many family and school supporters cheering on the girls. I believe their best is yet to come this season as we look towards qualifying for state at the Regional Meet.”

The Thunder will be at Burke/South Central this Thursday, September 28 and then run at Parkston on October 5th. The Region Meet is at Freeman on October 11 and the State Meet is in Rapid City on October 21.
Monster meet in Burke on Thursday
From Erik Person, Superintendent and Assistant cross-country coach:
New for this year is that we are hosting the Great Plains Conference Meet concurrently with the Cougar Invite, similar to the way Chamberlain runs theirs along with their conference.  Teams coming this year include: Alcester-Hudson, Andes Central/Dakota Christian, Avon, Bon Homme, Burke/South Central, Corsica-Stickney, Freeman Academy/Marion, Gayville-Volin, Gregory, Irene-Wakonda, Kimball/White Lake, Lyman, Marty, Scotland, Tripp-Delmont/Armour, Wagner.
That is a nice mix of cross-country talent being assembled in Burke tomorrow. We're getting towards the stretch run of cross country right now and everyone is in shape and teams are battling.
One cool thing about the meet is they have a traveling trophy. When one team gets the trophy they can see all the past winners on it. That's a nice little tradition.
Meet starts tomorrow at 4:15 at the Burke Golf Course.
Class B cross country poll - Boys
Well, we have some movement atop the Class B cross-country rankings. At Monday's meet in Miller, top-ranked Ipswich ran into James Valley Christian and JVC prevailed. JVC is always tough and there was some question about their third runner but JVC topped Ipswich 17-14 to jump into the top spot in the poll.

Boys Rankings: :
#1 James Valley Christian

#2 Ipswich

#3 Burke-South/Central

#4 Warner

#5 White River

Girls rankings:

Gonna flip-flop Newell and Ipswich here. Didn't think Newell ran great at Rapid City and Ipswich's top-two are just TUFF.

Class B girls:

#1 Ipswich

#2 Newell

#3Duebrook Area

# 4 Philip

#5 Gayville-Volin
