Is Parkston a SLEEPING GIANT in 9AA football
Aug 16, 2017

By Rich Winter

When the South Dakota high-school football re-classifications came out last spring, one of the items that made the biggest of splashes for me was that of seeing the Parkston Trojans move down from 11B to 9AA. If memory serves I was giving Winner's Jody Brozik a hard time about the Trojans being one of the teams that would give Winner a go this season and he promptly stuck it right back in my face with a 'We don't have to worry about them, they got moved down to 9AA."

While the 11B field doesn't have to worry about the 9AA teams, 9AA had better be on high alert because Parkston is only a few years removed from winning an 11B title, and they were a team that started slowly a year ago but came on like a freight train towards the end of the season.

Yesterday the first South Dakota media poll came out and right away I looked for Parkston. While they didn't crack the top-5 they did make the those receiving votes category. For me personally, with this being a well coached football team with a long and rich football tradition and some tuff, TUFF kids, I think that's a tad low.

9AA Football rankings:

Class 9AA

1. Gregory (24)                  126

2. Baltic (1)          62

3. Bon Homme (1)           59

4. Wolsey-Wessington   44

5. Garretson                      37

Receiving votes: Webster Area 30, Hamlin 10, Parkston 9, Kimball/White Lake 7, Miller/Highmore-Harrold 3, North Border 3.

Just looked at the Parkston schedule and Dear Barbara they come out of the gates against a couple of loaded 9AA teams. On Friday they take on No. 3 Bon Homme in Tabor and the following week they have No. 1 and overwhelming 9AA favorite, Gregory.

0 Aug 18 7:00 p.m. CT Bon Homme Tyndall
1 Aug 25 7:00 p.m. CT Gregory Parkston
2 Sep 01 7:00 p.m. CT Kimball/White Lake White Lake
3 Sep 08 7:00 p.m. CT Potter County Parkston
4 Sep 15 7:00 p.m. CT Platte-Geddes Platte
5     OPEN     - - -
6 Sep 29 7:00 p.m. CT Wolsey-Wessington Wolsey
7 Oct 06 7:00 p.m. CT Miller/Highmore-Harrold Parkston
8 Oct 13 7:00 p.m. CT Lower Brule Parkston

HOLAY that is a loaded schedule from top to bottom!

One thing for sure the coaching staff of HC Eric Norden, Matt Grave, Jason Weber, Chad Jodozi, Craig Bruening and John Gilman are going to know exactly what they have and exactly what they need to work on after those first two games.

See Dawson Semmler listed as QB this season. That appears to be a change, but, what better guy to have calling the shots than Mr. TUFF himself. See a lot of talented and athletic names on that roster that I recognize from other sports, and, see a lot of sophomores that might have a few bumps and bruises early, but will likely get better by the end of the season.
