Luke Julian fell to the track after a big effort in the 1600 at Sturgis

Don't worry....LUKE JULIAN is gonna be just fine

As distance runners from across the midwest flock to Sioux Falls and the Howard Wood Dakota relays, I myself, can't wait to get a look at St. Thomas More senior Luke Julian...

Have seen the distance runner three times in the last two weeks. Once in Pierre, once in Sturgis and once in the Dairy Queen just outside of Sturgis after the Sturgis track meet.

Down in Mission, we are pretty enamored with this Julian fellow. Have seen him at state cross for the last few years and been right there watching at the state track meet, with a few of our athletes bumping heads with Mr. Julian.

In fact, we jokingly call him KING LUKE, because the kid is really, really good.

That said, a couple times in my periphery I've heard the phrase, 'Luke looks slow this year', and each time I've kinda bristled.

Seems like the distance coaches over at STM really know what they're doing. They bring their athletes along slowly, run them in an event or two early, sharpen their speed in 4 x 400's and generally just get ready.

Seems like Julian ran good at Howard Wood last season, not great...BUT, three weeks later, he was golden, finishing 2nd in the 800 and winning a scintillating 1600 battle with Sioux Falls Christian's Caleb DeWeerd.

As the athletes gather in Howard Wood, I'll be keeping my eyes on Julian and his training partner Ty Trainor.

Expect both of them to be up thee and competing.

Neither might set lifetime bests this weekend.

But in three weeks, look out.

Happened across a nice Facebook post from a new friend of mine with a picture of Julian who announced that he will be attending the Colorado School of Mines next fall.

Told my periphery this news and a son, who just completed his first year at South Dakota School of Mines uttered the words, "OOOOOOHHH, Colorado School of Mines is TUFF,"

Like I said, Luke Julian will be just fine!
