Dell Rapids SQUEEZES past Platte/Geddes in State LEGION opener
Jul 22, 2017

By Rich Winter

After scratching out an early lead in their first game of the State B American Legion baseball tournament at Leahy Bowl in Winner, Dell Rapids found themselves in a bit of a jam.

A gritty Platte-Geddes squad who at one point trailed 4-0, clawed back into the game scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth and one more in their half of the 7th to tie the game at 4-4.

After 8 tied at 4-4.

After 9 tied at 4-4.

And so as Dell Rapids entered the tenth, they did so having not scored a run since the top of the 6th when Josh Roemen's 2-run single gave Dell Rapids their third and fourth run of the game.

Top of 10, Anderson reached when he was hit by a pitch from Platte/Geddes reliever Xavier Marshall. Hansen reached to put runners on first and second.

A double-steal moved Anderson and Hansen advances to 2nd and 3rd with a double steal to set up the play of the game.

Dell Rapids squared for the bunt, delivered a beauty that was fielded cleanly by Marshall who threw to home as he dived to the turf.

While the ball was in time, the tag was not and after the ball fell from Trevor Sprik's mitt, Dell Rapids took a 5-4 lead.

And then, they did it again!

Hansen scored on another suicide squeeze as the team advanced with a 6-4 win. Dell Rapids takes on Vermillion in one championship bracket while host team Winner/Colome takes on Spearfish in an all west-river semi
