Kelly O'Bryan won the long and triple jumps at the Class B state track meet

Colome's Kelly O'Bryan catches RARE - AIR at State track meet
May 30, 2017

By Rich Winter

Was visiting with Linda Kinzer on Saturday morning at Howard Wood, and, not having really gotten on social-media or the internet, I had no idea that Colome senior Kelly O'Bryan had won the triple jump the day before.

Kinzer noted an effort that seemed absurd at the time, 43-11.25 inches in a back-and-forth duel with Wall's Allan McDonnell that eventually resulted in O'Bryan pulling out all the stops on his last jump to win the event and break the school record by over a foot.

Now, mind you, I was pretty stunned that O'Bryan had even placed in the event. Young man got off to a great start this season down at Dan Lennon, but, as the season wore on he was jumping in the high-30's and low 40's.

While O'Bryan had pre-qualified in the triple jump, there was no evidence going into the meet that would suggest he had a 44-footer in there.

But, tape don't lie and O'Bryan SNAGGED a state triple-jump title.

And so, as I'm doodling along Saturday I figured there was no way O'Bryan was going to win the long jump. A medal would have been great, but then to hear the announcer call the name Kelly O'Bryan winning the Class B long jump with a leap of 21'3.75", well that puts the double state championship in the...

WOW....that's showing up on the biggest stage.

Matt Campbell was his awesome self:

Campbell finished second in both the shot-put and discus events but it took the best throws in both events, regardless of class to relegate him to 2nd place.

Great career...Placed in the discus three times...

Tremendous field event success helped the Cowboys to a 5th place finish in the team standings with 36 points scored.
