West Central's Braden Peters and Beresford's Alec Atwood are both juniors and both ran sub-16 at the Class A state meet in Rapid City

Class A cross is in good hands - Man that race was fast

By Rich Winter
Was looking at the times and places from the South Dakota Class A cross-country meet and came away quite impressed at the sheer depth and talent of the Class A cross-country field. As expected, West Central's Derick Peters ran away with the race and posted the fastest 5k time of any class with a blistering 15:06.
But, after Peters, Beresford's Alec Atwood and another Peters from West Central, Braden Peters both ran sub-16.
Toss in St. Thomas More's Ty Trainor who was second a year ago and always comes on strong at the end of the season (16:05), and you have some elite times coming from the Class A field.
So elite, in fact, that all four of the top guys in Class A would have beaten AA champ, Jack Elliott of Sioux Falls Lincoln who clocked a 16:09
Was hoping Facebook friend, Custer's Joe Rush would have finished higher, 5th, and then I looked qt the time, 16:11....That is quite a result, very fast and can't wait to see what Rush does on the track this spring.
All season long, Rush kinda wore his heart on his sleeve in regards to the push for a possible team title. In the end, West Central, placing four in the top-20 claimed the team title, 34-54 as the Wildcast finished second.
Rush's thoughts - Thank you all who came out and supported yesterday! Although it was not the result I wanted, my team and I left it all out there on the course! Custer girls got 2nd and Custer boys got 2nd as well, plus we got the "combined teams award" for the third year on a row!
Can't ever feel bad if you leave it all on the course....Congratulations Custer on that combined team championship, you know the one the best PROGRAM gets for doing so well.
Youth is served:
Heard from my east-river eyes, Brian Decker, that Beresford's Alec Atwood is the real deal. Atwood and Braden Peters of West Central both clocked sub 16's and oh baby are they going to be a handful in track and for the 2018 cross country season.
Keep an eye on some talented young guns:
Always like looking through the results and seeing some of the young, youngsters that are coming up. Two athletes you need to keep an eye on are Belle Fourche 7th-grader Sawyer Clarkson and Winner 8th grader Kade Watson. The pair finished 14th and 15th at the state meet and are likely to have some delicious battles over the next five years.
