Carter Brickman picked up the win on the mound and drove in two first-inning runs as Winner/Colome defeats Minor/McCook 5-3
Panic Button

Carter Brickman comes up huge as Winner/Colome defeats Minor/McCook

If as most baseball prognosticator at the State B American Legion Tournament in Winner seems to be indicating, that this tournament is going to come down to pitching, chalk one up for Drew Weber and the Winner/Colome Royals.

These first round games are always dicey...Ya don't know a lot about the competition and you don't want to throw your best pitcher out of pitches early in the tournament. So, sometimes ya roll the dice.

While Winner/Colome's Carter Brickman might not be considered the (ACE) of the staff, he's got a little big-game history, having defeated West Central in a state championship game last season.

Brickman was lights out early, getting out of the first on six pitches as Minor/McCook went down 1,2,3 to start the game.

The top of Winner's order is loaded with experience, speed and a whole lot of savvy and that group produced in the bottom of the first.

Calhoon reached first and the Winner lead-off guy for their record-setting relays just kept going after a wild throw to first. It took the Minor/McCook first-baseman a moment to find the ball and an alert Calhoon turned on the jets to reach third and nearly went home but was alertly held by coach Drew Weber with no outs.

And then, experience took over.

With Minor/McCook pitcher, Gassman struggling to find the plate, Kelly O'Bryan walked. And then Drew DeMers walked.

Showing some championship mettle, Gassman reached back and struck out the next two Winner/Colome batters.

And that's when Carter Brickman did his damage.

Young man slapped a single to right bringing in Calhoon and O'Bryan. DeMers would score later in the inning on a play at the plate to lift Winner/Colome to a 3-0 advantate.

Minor/McCook ralled for two in their half of the second but Brickman settled down from that point forward, and after being taken from the mound to play third, Brickman got a huge fist-pump and a well done from W/C coach Weber.

Winner added two late runs to earn the 5-3 win and advance to today's championship round semi-finals where they will take on Spearfish.
