Winnebago stunned the Nebraska prep sports landscape in 2015 when they captured the C1 state title
Can the BAGO boys do it again Feb 21, 2017
By Rich Winter
Haven't paid as much attention to the Winnebago boys this year as I would have liked. Working on a new website that concentrates on prep sports in South Dakota will do that to a fellow, but, while I'm not on top of them, I've seen enough to know this team looks like they are on a mission.
The Indians enter their last regular season game tonight vs. a 6-23 Fort Calhoun squad and then it's on to the playoffs.
Winnebago is 23-2 on the year with the only losses coming to Omaha Central, 97-86 on Dec. 22 and at Ponca, 53-47 on Jan. 21.
Was visiting with David Wingett's dad for a moment last week and he told he son David had moved into the top-10 all-time for scoring in Nebraska and that a deep run into the state tournament could move Wingett Jr. into the top-5.
Nebraska all-time leading scorers: (List does not have Wingett on it yet)
2748-Bill Holliday, Wilsonville, 1960
2406-Ron Simmons, Sumner, 1964
2337-Bob Siegel, Fairbury, 1973
2336-Lindley Thompson, Paxton, 1996
2292-Ron Zook, Glenvil, 1950
2247-Kurt Lauer, Gibbon, 1964
2247-Rylee Reinertson, Gibbon, 2014
2237-Bruce Chubick, West Holt, 1989
2205-Austin Kaczor, Ewing, 2010
2195-Wes Eikmeier, Archbishop Bergan, 2008
Winnebago stats:
Scoring: Wingett 24.7, D'Von LaPointe 14.5, Manape Cleveland 11.2 - All told six players on the team score 6.7 points or better per game.
Heard the news a while back that Winnebago would not be coming back to the Lakota Nation Invitational next year. While I think some of the players and teams might have said, 'whew' and some others, 'wheeeeoooooowwww' I think we'll all miss the energy and excitement the Bago boys brought to Rapid City for the last two Decembers.
Wonderful last three years for these guys but the work isn't done! Good luck in these playoffs and keep me honest and in the loop!
