Alexandria's Tyson Gau bats .467 and is 5-0 on the mound for his Angels.

Can anyone take down Alexandria as state amateur baseball starts today
Aug 2, 2017

By Rich Winter

Alright, I admit it, I've had my head in the sand for years in regards to the state amateur baseball tournament. Somehow I knew it was going on but I had no idea of the magnitude of this tournament or the passion that resonates through some very-good baseball towns across South Dakota.

As I get more dialed into these baseball towns/communities, I've come to realize that it takes a lot to keep baseball alive. It starts at t-ball, goes through Majors, up to teeners and finally on to high school and then legion.

And then, it gets interesting!

The amateur teams are a collection of what's left over from all of those levels of baseball. Guys, in their 20's, 30's and 40's with nothing left to prove but still competing simply for the love of the game and their town.

That's awesome!

And so, as the tournament kicks off this evening with Winner/Colome taking on Dell Rapids you can bet that a bunch of new baseball heroes will emerge. New stars will come through, and OLD legends will rekindle the flame and remind us of just how good some of these athletes are.

All that said, if the tournament holds form, Alexandria, 22-1 has to be the favorite. Just one loss in the last two years (Winner/Colome this year) as the Angels have gone 50-1 in their last 51 games.

Angels looking to make it five straight trips to the Class B finals with titles coming in 2013 and 2016.

Look for another deep run in the tournament with Trevor Vermeulen and Tyson Gau combining to go 13-0 on the season. Vermeulen has simply been untouchable, recording a 1.52 ERA. Gau's ERA is 1.89 and he leads the team with a .467 average.

Alexandria will play Flandreau in the first round at 7:30 p.m. Saturday for a second consecutive year.

As that baseball tournament begins from Mitchell today, liveticket.tv will be there front and center. All of the games will be webcast at www.liveticket.tv. Winner/Colome games will be broadcast on their normal networks.

All games, 12-straight days of baseball and you can catch all those games from the comfort of your own home at www.liveticket.tv
