Todd County's Caelyn Valandra-Prue gets ready to assault Big Dakota sprint records

Can Valandra-Prue finally take down Jill Osterberg's hallowed 400 record
Apr 16, 2017

By Rich Winter

With the Big Dakota Conference meet looming Tuesday, the ole Panic Button came across a gem of a link on the Miller high-school page.

The Big Dakota Conference track meet records...OOOOOOHHHH!

As I look up and down that list see a lot of familiar names some that stretch back to my era, the mid 1980's. Looking at the sprint records, the 100, 200 and 400, I can't help but wonder if former Chamberlain sprint sensation, Jill Osterberg's 400 meter record is finally going to go down.

1986 - Jill Osterberg - Chamberlain 1986 - 59.36

Man, time really goes, that's 31 years man.

At any rate, Todd County 8th grader, Caelyn Valandra-Prue has been blasting through the sprints in south-central South Dakota and uncorked a big 400 at the Todd County Invitational.

Class A leading 58.15

400m Dash - 1:00.70
1. Valandra-Prue, Caelyn 58.20 Todd County
2. Rud, Olivia 1:00.60 Madison

Valandra-Prue is a wicked competitor, and if she knows about the record, she'll probably go after it.

The other sprint records could be in trouble as well.

100 M Dash Alix Driscoll Winner 2008 12.32

200 M. Dash Danette Mills Winner 1999 26.26

Valandra-Prue ran 12.44 in Martin Thursday, with a wind sort-of at her side. Put that on her back and she might come screaming down the track in 11-something.

100m Dash - 12.90
1. Howell, Shayla 12.00 Belle Fourche
2. Valandra-Prue, Caelyn 12.50 Todd County
3. Wevik, Mikayla 12.50 Tea Area
4. Odenbach, Ashley 12.60 Spearfish
5. Strasser, Abbie 12.60 Lennox
6. Louis, Alexis 12.80 Spearfish
7. Pulse, Jacy 12.80 McCook Central/Montrose

And then you have the 200 record, 26.26 set in 1999 by Winner's Danette Mills.

That also could be in trouble....

200m Dash - 26.90
1. Howell, Shayla 25.30 Belle Fourche
2. Pulse, Jacy 26.30 McCook Central/Montrose
3. Valandra-Prue, Caelyn 26.50 Todd County

Going to be a fun day over in Winner. Ton or records in jeopardy, particularly on the girls side.

If ya can't make it in person, the events will be webcast at www.liveticket.tv or winnerwarriorslive.com or any of the sites with schools on the ticket.
