James Valley Christian has some big shoes to fill but by seasons end Tom Brandner's crew should be in the mix!!

Can James Valley Christian 3-peat in Class B cross
Sep 1, 2017

For Coach Tom Brantner's James Valley Christian Vikings cross country team to win their third state championship in a row, they will have to repeat the difficult task of replacing their number one runner from the previous year.

In 2015 the Vikings were lead by Jayden Waldner, placing 2nd overall.  Kedric Brantner followed in 4th place and Darrian Hood in 18th.  Other runners were Colton Schweigart, 30th place and Michael Waldner 47th place.

Last year Brantner finished with another 'top 5' finish, while Hood moved from 18th to 10th.  Schweigart made a big move from 30th to 16th. Those three combined to win JVC's second state champoinship.

Just as Jayden Waldner graduated the year before, now has Brantner.  This leaves Coach Brantner with that challenge once again: replace your number runner.  The Vikings will be strong again with their #1 and #2 spots with Hood and Schweigart.  The most likely runner to fill that #3 spot would be Braden Held.  As the season progresses we will see if the Vikings can put together another championship team.

Other teams to watch:

Freeman Academy/Marion (runners-up 2 years in a row. Got to believe they're ready for a championship)

Ipswich (anyone remember the finish between them and JVC in the 4x800 at state track meet)

Burke/South Central (Kray Person is back with some youngsters to bring along)

Warner (has one of the best 1-2 combinations with Larson and Wirth. they need to develop a 3rd by state meet)

With the season having just started, there's a lot that can, and will, happen by October 21. it will be interesting to see how each of these teams develop during the season. Sure looks like they will give us a good race at the State Meet.
