When the dust settles will it be Gregory vs. Hamlin??

Can Hamlin hang with the 9AA CHAMPS - Upset Alert(s) in 9AA first round
Oct 19, 2017

By Rich Winter

As the 9AA football playoffs get ready to go tonight, one thing is pretty clear, the road to the 9AA title goes through Gregory. You can paint all kinds of scenariors and twist other teams into the conversation, but the Gorillas have played the who is who amongst 9AA contenders, and other than Bon Homme, 36-26, the Gorillas have looked like MONSTERS.

Really hope that fans in Gregory and across the state breathe in these last few moments from one of the BEST teams EVER assembled in one of the richest football towns in South Dakota.

* Andy McCance - You don't see what he does everyday

* Jayd VanDerWerff - You can't stop him you can only hope to contain him...ISH.

* Realize that J.J. Beck is only a junior but the guy hits like a MACK truck.

This is a big TUFF, physical football team that has all the experience in the world and plays like they have a chip on their shoulder.

Can Hamlin challenge:

Alright, so as the playoffs begin, here looms this Hamlin Chargers team from Region 2. Like Gregory, they have run the table and enter the playoffs tonight with an 8-0 record. Let's check out who Hamlin has played this year.

In eight games this year, Hamlin has outscored the opposition 320-21. Couple of big-time opponents on the schedule as Hamlin beat a now 7-1 Britton-Hecla squad 14-6 on Aug. 18. The Chargers beat a 6-2 Webster squad, 35-7 on Sep. 1 and beat 5-3 Deuel 22-0 and 6-2 Clark/Willow Lake 22-8 on Oct. 13.

Hamlin has some playas...

* QB - Bryce Williams...791 yards passing, 9 TD's 1 interception....Oh, and he has 908 yards rushing and 17 TD's

* John Roe - OL/DL - 6-4, 270...38 tackles this season, 4 for a loss....Think what you want, but when you have a big old road-grader at left-tackle...Stuff is going to move.

First-round matchups:

Wolsey-Wessington @ North Border

Webster @ Miller/Highmore Harold

Garretson @ Hamlin

Baltic @ Arlington-Lake/Preston

Deuel @ Bon Homme

Parkston @ Irene Wakonda

Elkton/Lake-Benton @ Gregory

Rapid City Christian @ Kimball-White Lake

Look for some upsets in the first round of the 9AA playoffs.

Maybe this is me just being selfish, but, I don't want to see Kimball/White-Lake play Gregory in the quarters. After going through the gauntlet there first four games, KWL held off a pesky Wolsey-Wessington team and then buried everyone else.

In order to avoid the Gregory house of pain, someone needs  to lose for KWL, who is going to crush Rapid City Christian.

Most likely: Wolsey-Wessington over North Border

- Telling ya, North Border had better been on their best behavior. They host a 4-4 Wolsey-Wessington team that is no joke. No disrespect to North Border but they lost 38-12 at home to 9B No. 2 ranked Sully Buttes. Gordon Hooks is a heck of a coach and with a mostly junior roster the Warbirds have just gotten better this year. Beat Parkston 38-32 and went the distance with Gregory.

Baltic over Arlington/Lake Preston:

Baltic started the season and was ranked most of the year. I think they have played a tougher schedule than ALP....

Couple of upsets could change the dynamis of the second round considerably...

Let the games begin...so fired up...Of course you can check out a ton of high school playoff games at www.liveticket.tv
