Big Dakota Conference well represented in first Class A volleyball poll
Aug 22, 2017

By Rich Winter

Well, the first volleyball polls came out today and the Big Dakota Conference was well represented in the media poll with Miller being ranked No. 4 in the state while Modbridge-Pollock is in the receiving voted category.

Miller, behind the all-state play of Kadye Fernholz has a nice veteran group led by five seniors for the Linda DeBoar coached group.

While Mobridge/Pollock doesn't look very tall, the roster is dotted with eight seniors that have state tournament experience, having finished 8th in the state Class A state tournament a year ago.

Class A media poll rankings:

CLASS A

1. Dakota Valley (12)      31-2    81     1

2. SF Christian (5)           27-6    75     2

3. Madison (1)                24-9    62   NR

T4. Miller                        22-9   19   NR

T4. Parker                       28-6   19    5*

*Parker played in Class B in 2016.

Receiving votes: Sioux Valley 19-14, Bon Homme (1) 29-6, Custer 33-1, West Central 24-8, Mobridge-Pollock 21-8.

Not surprised by the rankings as Dakota Valley is the defending Class A state champions. Sioux Falls Christian, who finished 5th in the state tournament is the early No. 2 while Madison, last year's Class A state runner-up slides in at No. 3.

Always bristle a little when I see the rankings so devoid of west river schools. Custer had a brilliant season a year ago and the Wildcats were 33-1 on the year with their only loss coming in the sweet-16 round a year ago.

But, back to the Big Dakota.

Winner had a great off-season and with three, 6-footers in coach Jaime Kaiser's rotation, Winner could be a sleeper in the A field. Looking for a big year from Alexis Richey as her game and leadership continue to develop and expand.

Todd County - Have been following the development of this team for a couple years now and coach Samantha Hand finally has a group of juniors and seniors that have the experience and athletic talent to hang with everyone in the conference.

Chamberlain - Suddenly Chamberlain has three 6-footers in the lineup and am expecting coach Amy Donovan's squads to be more competitive than in recent years.

Will have to see on Stanley County, CEB and Crow Creek for the rest of Region 6A, but, as a whole, it looks like the competition and level of play for the conference as a whole is significantly upgraded.

Winner and Bon Homme do battle tonight in Winner, that match will be webcast at www.winnerwarriorslive.com
