BSC upsets Scotland as MASSIVE sports weekend unfolds
Oct 20, 2017
By Rich Winter
Remember back on Aug. 18 when Mike Sebern's squad hosted Scotland, at home to get the season started? On that August evening, Scotland dumped BSC 30-12 in what looked like the start of a long season.
Well, kind of...After back-to-back thumpings from Colome and Corsica-Stickny, Sebern's squad was 1-3 and the playoffs looked uncertain. Funny how things turn around during a year...The Cougars won 3-4 down the stretch and hit the playoffs with a 4-4 mark and a date with Scotlan, in Scotland.
This time it was all BSC...as the Cougars pounced! After giving up a first score to Scotland, BSC rallied behind 4 TD runs from Brock Karbo and pulled away for a 40-18 win.
That's impressive!!
Visited with Brock Karbo a bit on Facebook today and asked him about someone TUFF on defense that doesn't get a lot of pub and just how the team improved through the year.
"Kaleb Wells is our nose guard and makes some noise on the defensive line. He man-handles every opposing center and gets quite a few tackles," Karbo said.
On Team improvement...
"Since the first game we have moved kids around and just believed in each other. We knew we had potential but we were not consitent early on. Then we had hard losses to Colome and Corsica-Stickney and instead of hanging our heads we learned frm our mistakes and stuck together as a team. We just have a group of guys that have stuck together and wanted to win. Now we are meshing very good and feel confident in one another instead of questioning some of the stuff we do. Credit goes out to the coaches for pushing us everyday," Karbo said.
Big Numbers:
* Closed the game on a 26-6 run.
* Karbo 4 TD runs, 154 yards passing, two TD's
* Tyrone Mizner - 45 yards rushing, 90 receiving - TD
* Finn Hanson - 68 receiving, 75 rushing - TD
Scoring Summary:
First quarter
S: Mason Dennis 60 run (pass failed)
BSC: Brock Karbo 3 run (run failed)
Second quarter
S: Dennis 50 run (run failed)
BSC: Finn Hanson 68 pass from Karbo (Karbo run)
Third quarter
BSC: Tyrone Mizner 44 pass from Karbo (Mizner run)

BSC: Karbo 1 run (pass failed)
BSC boys aiming for a state cross-country TITLE
After a long season of running against elite competition across the state, the BSC boys cross-country team laces them up one more time this year for a run at a state team title. That team title looks very tight with BSC one of the teams that is considered to be a favorite..
Poll from Paul Ekern - Duebrook assistant coach:
Class “B” Boys
- Burke/South Central
- Ipswich
- James Valley Christian
- Freeman Academy/Marion
- Warner
- Harding County
One more run at the state meet for Kray Person who has had a brilliant career at BSC. But, in order to get that team title, he'll need his mates to run big.
BSC's Region places and times:
1 Person, Kray 12 Burke/South Central 16:46.42 1
5 Mayer, Tyson 10 Burke/South Central 18:08.37 5
7 Liewer, Jackson 10 Burke/South Central 18:16.36 7
12 Vaughn, Washake 10 Burke/South Central 18:58.32 12
25 Williams, Jesse 11 Burke/South Central 20:54.67 24
While the BSC girls aren't expected to contend for a team title, a young crew that ran well at regions, 2nd place as a team, looks to gain some valuable experience at the state meet.
9 Person, Lacey 10 Burke/South Central 22:22.25 7
11 Bolander, Brecken 7 Burke/South Central 22:25.58 9
12 Vaughn, Jolene 8 Burke/South Central 22:28.33 10
14 Zara, Anna 11 Burke/South Central 22:57.67 12
All four of those girls ran within 35 seconds of one another...
Good luck to Laurie Kenzy and the cross crew as they head to Rapid City.
