BEE ascends to top-spot in 11B
Aug 22, 2017

By Rich Winter

Well, it didn't take long for some major shuffling in the Class 11B polls after previous No. 1, Winner lost to Sioux Falls Christian 24-6 to get the season off to a bang.

For Bridgewater/Ethan/Emery, the only team that gave Winner any kind of go in the 11B playoffs a year ago, the 2017 team had their game vs. Beresford last week moved to Sioux Falls...Change of venue, no problem as BEE routed the Watchdogs 40-0 which impressed the media voters enough to vault the Seahawks into the top slot.

Mr Tuff - Cole Gassman contributed 124 yards and 3 scores and QB Abiah Plastow's 20-yard TD strike to Brady Hawkins put BEE up 26-0 at the half. .

“I thought our kids played really well tonight,” BEE coach, Jeff Van Leur told the Sioux Falls Argus Leader. “We talked about being a better team when we walk off the field than when we walked on to it. Each series we got more confidence, we played well as a group and every time we made a mistake we got back up and got after it. I really liked that.”

Class 11B rankings:

Class 11B

1. Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan (30) 1-0   163    2

2. Aberdeen Roncalli (1)         1-0   111     4

3. SF Christian (2)                  1-0   108   RV

4. Sioux Valley                       1-0    57    RV

5. Chamberlain (1)                 0-0    27      5

Receiving votes: Winner 25, Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central 12, Groton Area 6.

Sioux Falls Christian jumped all the way into the rankings and all the way up to No. 3 after being unranked last week. The Cossacks of Sioux Valley jumped into the poll at No. 4 while the Cubs of Chamberlain remained at No 5 after being idle last week.

There are some monster 11B matchups in the cards this week.

* Sioux Falls Chrisitian is at Mobridge/Pollock (That is going to be a heck of a game)

* Sioux Valley at Beresford.....Sioux Valley hammered Canton 42-14 last week and vaulted into the rankings at No. 4...This is one of those games where we find out how good Beresford is and maybe how good Sioux Valley is....I get the same kinda feeling with the Chamberlain at Canton game. The C-Hawks are coming off a loss, No. 5 Chamberlain has a good returning QB in Jazz Dominguez and a punishing offensive line led by Nash Hutmacher....

* McCook Central/Montrose at Elk-Point Jefferson....MCC demolished Flandreau 43-6 and Elk Point had a bye week. Be a good test to see where these two teams stack up.

* BEE at Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central: Bee has that No. 1 ranking but WSSC looked sharp in a 36-8 thrashing of Wagner.

* Red Cloud @ Pine Ridge - The Crusaders looked good in their 46-32 win over Lead/Deadwood. Speedster Russell Leader Charge should start showing up on the radar....good back who is going to put up some monster numbers this week.

* Winner @ Stanley County - Well, after Stanley County looked good in a 30-20 win over MVP and Winner looked not like Winner in that 24-6 loss to Sioux Falls Christian, this game suddenly becomes a monster. Winner of this game might have the inside-track to the Region 4 title and perhaps a better potential seen in the playoffs.
