An impressive season opening win over Wolsey/Wessington vaults MHH into the 9AA conversation

Are the Miller/Highmore-Harrold Rustlers for real
Aug 23, 2017

By Rich Winter

Some big changes in the 9AA football polls this week, except at the top where No. 1 Gregory holds onto the top spot. Three of the top five teams in the 9AA pre-season ranking lost so the new polls reflect some major changes.

Bon Homme, a 6-0 winner over Parkston vaulted into the No. 2 ranking while Webster Area, the state runner-up a year ago moved into the No. 3 ranking with an impressive 51-0 blanking of Tri-State.

Baltic, North Border and Wolsey-Wessington were all ranked in the top-5 last week, all three of those teams lost.

Which brings us to Miller-Highmore/Harrold who laid the wood to Wolsey-Wessington, the 2015 champs, in an impessive season opening win for Will Castle and his team.

Class 9AA

1. Gregory (33)                      1-0   169     1

2. Bon Homme (1)                  1-0   123     3

3. Webster Area                     1-0     84    RV

4. Miller-Highmore/Harrold   1-0    55    RV

5. Hamlin                               1-0    41    RV

Receiving votes: Baltic 17, North Border 11, Wolsey-Wessington 6, Parkston 4.

Can't find a box-score for this game but looking up and down that roster, gotta say, Miller-Highmore/Harrold looks for real.

Seeing a tall, big, lanky and extremely quick squad that the rest of 9AA is going to have to contend with.

Speedster, Jarek Kindle is a sub 11-flat 100 guy and long jumps over 22-feet. QB Karst Hunter is 6-foot-4 and 195 lbs.

WR/DB, Steven Fernholz is 6-foot-4 and 185 lbs.

All told, Castle has nine seniors at his disposal.

Cartner Canham handles fullback and LB duties.

Junior, Eli Jones mans a running-back and LB spot.

But, of course, the Panic Button is going to focus on the big sexies the guys up front who never get the love and do all the work.

Senior Caleb DeBoer is a 6-foot, 265 fire-hydrant with eyebrows and Jack Jones at 5-foot-11 and 285 is another big guy up front. Gage Russell at TE goes 210 while Nathan Wiant, a junior, pushes people around in the 290's.

Love some of the size on this team including 6-5, 225 lb. junior, Jharrrett Bloomenrader at TE and DL.

While this team has vaulted into the rankings early, they will be tested and tested often with one of the more difficult schedules in 9AA.

This week it's Kimball/White Lake, next week, No. 2 Bon Homme in Miller. Gets tough down the stretch with an Oct. 6 game in Parkston and an Oct. 13 game at No. 1 Gregory.

Keep an eye on this team. Some scary good athletes with some size is a dangerous combination in 9AA.
