After knocking off Colome, the 11-11 Gorillas are one game away from the state tournament

Are the Gregory Gorillas Class B's cinderella squad
Mar 4, 2017

By Rich Winter

Midway through the third quarter of the District 12 Championship game between Colome and Gregory, with Colome having taken it's first, second-half lead, the season could have come unraveled for Jeff Determan's squad.

Could have...

The Gorillas scored a basket to regain the lead, 36-35 and then, Jayd Vanerwerff took over.

The 6-foot-2 sophomore who missed a good chunk of the regular season with an injury, muscled in a shot underneath the hoop (see video), then knocked down a 3-pointer on his way to 18 points as Gregory, 11-11 on the season stuck a fork in Drew Weber's Colome squad, with a 49-43 Gregory victory in a game played in the Corn Palace.

As the season wore on it looked more and more like the Region 6B championship would come down to No.2 ranked Corsica-Stickney vs. Weber's squad who finished the year at 16-5.

Instead, Gregory slipped past Colome and Platte-Geddes knocked off C/S, 58-56 in two overtimes as the favorites were sent packing.

With VanDerWerff out, Gregory limped out of the starting game, losing its first five games and seven of its first eight.

But, the Gorillas seemed to find their stride in late January and all of February.

A four game win streak from Feb. 4 to Feb. 11 was halted when Gregory lost a road game at Class A Bon Homme. The only other loss in the last month came, on the road, 51-35 against the same Platte-Geddes squad that beat them a week ago.

Gregory is 11-11, Platte-Geddes is 12-9 and no one in South Dakota basketball, except maybe the two communities involved thought that Cinderella might still be dancing in mid March.

Nice well rounded effort for Gregory last night as Vomacka (11) and Borszich (13) also reached double-figures.

Gregory (11-11): Aaron Voigt 1 2-4 4 Dylan Borszich 6 1-2 13 Jayd VanDerWerff 7 3-4 19 Robert Vomacka 5 0-1 11 Tommy Determan 1 0-0 2 Totals 20 6-11 49
