Kimball native and SDSU sophomore, Mike Daum play Denver today for the right to meet USD on Monday in Sioux Falls

Are Coyote fans really cheering for SDSU today

Never mind that Duke and North Carolina were playing yesterday, the game to watch turned out to be the University of South Dakota vs. Western Illinois. A lot of folks didn't just watch on the tube, they traveled to Sioux Falls to catch the first round of the Summit League tournament in person, and oh baby, they got treated to a dandy!

South Dakota, 22-10 has been terrific this season and earned the No. 1 seed in this Summit league tournament. Thoughts of a possible NCAA tournament bid from the Yotes have been more than just a whisper this season, and yet, the Coyotes struggled in the second half against an 8-20 Western Illinois squad.

Western Illinois tied the game at 68-all and sent it to overtime and even from Mission, South Dakota, you could just feel Coyote nation puckering up as that long-distance trey from the Leathernecks nearly sent Yote Nation into never-never land.

But, the Coyotes have a stud, a legitimate NBA prospect in sophomore, Matt Mooney and some legitimate big guys and the Coyotes stepped on the throats of the Leathernecks in OT, outscoring their lower seeded opponent, 10-1 to survive and advance to Monday's semifinal.

Wheeeewwww, South Dakota crisis averted!

And yet, as I look at the basketball landscape on this fine Sunday morning, I'm sure there are a lot of big games out there, but this evening South Dakota State hooks up with the University of Denver at the Denny Sanford Premier Center.

If SDSU wins, they play USD on Monday night in Sioux Falls in what could be one of the biggest and most intense games ever played in this historic rivalry.

Coyotes, Rabbits it sounds like Monday night madness in Sioux Falls. Shhhhh, what's that sound...sounds to me like some South Dakota fans might be cheering for South Dakota State today....What?

So, SDSU plays Denver today

SDSU could play USD on Monday

Tuesday Tea Area plays Little Wound in Winner and Pine Ridge plays Mount Vernon/Plank, also in Winner. St. Thomas More plays Aberdeen Roncalli in Pierre on Tuesday and Chamberlain clashes with Crow Creek, also in Pierre, also on Tuesday.

Ahhhh basketball....It's alive and well in South Dakota!!
